Whole Home Surge Protection

September 24, 2026•3 min read

Help protect your appliances and electrical equipment from power surges.

Your furnace, refrigerator and EV charger all depend on electronics to work. A power surge can damage those components, leaving you with repairs, replacement costs and equipment you can’t use.

Whole home surge protection helps reduce that risk. Installed at your electrical panel, it provides protection across connected circuits, reaching equipment that a surge protector behind your television cannot.

For homes with solar, surge protection can also help reduce the risk of surge damage to the system’s inverter or microinverters.

Where do power surges come from?

Lightning doesn’t have to strike your home to damage equipment inside it. A strike at a neighbouring property or on a nearby power line can cause a surge that reaches your home through electrical connections.

Surges can also come from switching on the electricity grid or equipment switching inside your home, so they can happen without a storm.

A strong surge can damage electronics immediately. Repeated smaller surges can contribute to deterioration over time. A surge protector helps limit the voltage reaching connected equipment by diverting surge current.

What equipment can it help protect?

Whole home surge protection helps protect equipment throughout your home, including your furnace, refrigerator, dishwasher and EV charger. For homes with solar, it can also help reduce the risk of surge damage to the inverter or microinverters.

You should still use suitable surge protectors for televisions, computers and other sensitive electronics. They provide additional protection at the outlet, working alongside the device at your electrical panel.

Keep using suitable surge protectors for your television, computer and other sensitive electronics. Protection at the panel and at the outlet work together.

Two things you can check today

First, check whether your power bars actually provide surge protection. Some simply give you more outlets. The label or manufacturer’s information should tell you which you have.

Then check the protection indicator, if there is one. A lit power switch doesn’t necessarily mean the surge protection is still working. Follow the instructions for your particular model.

What installation involves

We take care of installation at your electrical panel, including checking the connections. If you have an EV charger or solar, we include that equipment in our assessment.

Once installed, we’ll show you the protection indicator and explain what to look for so you can check its status over time.

Is it worth adding?

We include surge protection as an option when quoting electrical work because we think it’s a sensible precaution for the equipment in your home.

It cannot guarantee that equipment will never be damaged. It can reduce the risk from power surges, which makes it worth considering alongside the cost and inconvenience of replacing an appliance or other equipment.

If you’d like to know what’s involved for your home, contact us. We’ll explain the installation and cost, and answer your questions before you decide. No jargon, and no lightning bolts.
